The moment came during a Wired video segment where The Odyssey cast—including co-stars Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, and Anne Hathaway—were quizzed on the mythological underpinnings of Homer’s epic. Then there was the matter of a fan theory as to whether Athena (played by Zendaya) had any romantic designs on Odysseus, or at least on Damon’s take on him. Holland did not let the speculation stand; he put an end to it with some banter that has since gone viral.
“No, because she’s married to me,” Holland interjected, playfully blurring the lines between the ancient goddess and his real-life wife. Damon was in on the joke and helped elicit some good laughs from the panel. Then Pattinson put in a question as to what Athena’s character had imparted to Telemachus (Holland), and Damon made the most of it with a quip: “True love.”
The Premium on Hollywood Privacy
It is an unscripted moment that you do not often see, given how the couple has chosen to keep their marriage strictly legal and entirely out of the limelight. They have been methodical about staying out of the usual celebrity news cycle since they quietly wed, keeping the public completely in the dark as to the particulars of their wedding.
In a recent profile with Esquire, Holland laughed off the media frenzy surrounding their relationship—specifically addressing the viral AI wedding pictures that flooded social media. He joked that he didn’t even need to convince his own family the online images were fake, dryly noting that “they were all there” at the actual ceremony. But for anyone hoping the nod would open the door to more details, Holland quickly shut it down, leaving no doubt that he has zero desire to turn their private life into public consumption.
In an interview on the New York Times’ Modern Love podcast, Zendaya put it this way: to be a high-profile celebrity one has to make a point of keeping certain personal milestones for oneself. She is not alone in adopting such a boundary.
Holland and Zendaya have found success with the approach. They have been able to stoke the public’s interest in their relationship with an occasional show of wit that feels unscripted, as opposed to giving the tabloids what they want.
