The 2022 Amazon Prime Video sci-fi series has a die-hard cult following that considers it a real hidden gem, thanks to its emotionally rich and powerhouse leads.

Following a streaming series these days is never safe. Viewers, however, learn not to get too attached, since few titles are lucky enough to make it past their initial run. Most are abruptly cancelled due to the high cost of production and the variability of viewership, leaving audiences hanging just as the story is beginning. But even when cut short, a single season can leave a lasting impression. Case in point: Night Sky, which was canceled by Amazon way too soon but was such a bright spot in TV.

The premise is a refreshing one for those who want thoughtful, character-driven sci-fi, as opposed to the usual intergalactic battles and loud special effects. Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons play aging couple Irene and Franklin York, who discover a mysterious portal in their backyard that opens into a chamber overlooking a deserted, alien world. For years they keep the secret safe … until a mysterious young man throws their quiet lives into turmoil. The series uses its high-concept premise to explore deeply human themes: love, marriage, aging, grief, and the search for meaning late in life. That practical approach makes the story interesting even to those who don’t normally watch sci-fi.

Night Sky is a deliberate attempt to avoid genre tropes. The direction, cinematography and score combine to create a melancholy, evocative atmosphere that pulls the viewer into an intimate family drama. Simmons and Spacek do most of the heavy lifting, however. Their chemistry is the series’ clear highlight, with universal praise for the nuance and sensitivity they bring to a couple grappling with the passage of time, old regrets and the ever-present hope for another chance.

Despite garnering positive reviews upon release, the series unfortunately failed to hook a large enough audience to justify its budget. In hindsight, Prime Video’s marketing strategy missed the target, going for the traditional sci-fi fans that likely weren’t looking for a slow-burn relationship drama. Night Sky was cancelled after just eight episodes. But it’s still a brilliant piece of television waiting to be rediscovered, thanks to its emotional resonance and two masterclass performances from its legendary leads.
